The Open Road

I got back from my solo, nine-day road trip a day ago. As I traveled, I saw “back to school” everywhere.  Like many of you, I am always sad to see summer end.   I love summer and all it brings.  I grieve as I see it replaced by fall, and I reluctantly pry each finger… Continue reading The Open Road

Life Giving Words

As I have looked at Facebook I see everyone getting ready for the school year to start. It makes me want to remind parents, kids, and teachers to please be kind and loving.  Remember to treat others the way you want to be treated.  I wish adults could realize the impact every word has on… Continue reading Life Giving Words

Doing or Being

My devotion began, today, saying, “ As God walked with His people through the generations, He progressively revealed His nature according to His purpose and the needs of His people.” I love thinking about this truth! He progressively reveals His nature. He does this for our generation too. He will reveal His true character… Continue reading Doing or Being

Bottle Rockets and Red Rubber Boots

reposting this 4th of July blog I wrote last year.

The same memory comes to mind when I reflect on the 4th of July. Every year was the same scene. Me standing at the screen door looking out watching my brother and all the other children enthralled in all kinds of fireworks. I finally would get coaxed to come outside when my brother promised a ceasefire. I would scrounge up all my nerve to come outside just to hold a sparkler. I would try to act like I was having fun while writing my name in the air. Truthfully, I was terrified and couldn’t wait to get back inside the house.

My brother, Mark, lived in a world of superheroes. Normally that wouldn’t be that much danger (except to his social life), but on the fourth of July, when I was 6 and he was 8, it was a bad combination. Our mom was frugal and wise. She only…

How to be the Perfect Pastor’s Wife

All pastor’s wives are not created the same!  There is no cookie cutter kit that came when we were called.  A few years back I ran across something someone (unknown to me) had written, a satire describing the perfect pastor.  I thought it was clever and pointed. I’m going to give you my… Continue reading How to be the Perfect Pastor’s Wife

There’s No One Like Me

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.” Psalm 139: 13-14 When our daughter, Rachel, was little I sang a song to her I learned in an early education class at seminary… Continue reading There’s No One Like Me

The Prayer of Saint Francis of Assis

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be… Continue reading The Prayer of Saint Francis of Assis

Temporary Living (version 2)

“I am a stranger on earth; do not hide your commands from me.” (Psalm 119:19) I tried to go back in my mind and count how many times we moved and how many houses I lived in during my lifetime, but I gave up. Let’s just say I moved many times before I married Bill,… Continue reading Temporary Living (version 2)

Let’s All Just Calm Down

When I was growing up living in Southern California we would make that long drive back and forth to Oklahoma where the rest of our extended family lived. It was the day when cars were uncomfortable and hot. My brother had quite a lot of rambunctiousness in his body. Halfway… Continue reading Let’s All Just Calm Down
